Just adding my two cents in here...I have a lot of tools around here, both hand & power and as far as the Craftsman tools go, I have had very few problems with them. I have never had a problem getting any hand tool replaced free of charge if it had failed, regardless of the age, and many of my Craftsman hand tools are rather old having been handed down from my grandfather and father that go back prior to the great depression and they are still solid tools. However, with the power tools you can only get a free replacement due to failure within the first year from the date of purchase, then they start prorating things.
Now that being said, I have only had one type of Craftsman power tool fail and that was their "best" vibrating finish sander with the dust collection system. I burned up a dozen of these before the allowed an even exchange for another brand. The problem with this model sander is that the dust collection system passed right through the shaft area where the bearings were located. Well while in use the grease around the bearings would liquify and be absorbed by the fine wood dust being collected. As you guessed, this resulted in greater heat & friction on the shafts bearings, which caused things to seize up and then the motor fried.
Anyway, with the problems that I have encountered I found that the company was very easy to deal with and they stand behind their products. As mentioned previously in this thread, both Sears and Sears Hardware stores are everywhere, so it makes any needed replacement rather easy. Based upon my experiences, I would not doubt it if you could get them to replace any tool if they do not have or no longer make replacement parts for it.

Not all the time but quite often you'll find the Craftsman and Ryobi tools
to be identical too.
