[sdiy] Linear or Exponential FM?

For VCO cross modulation, if one were to choose between either linear FM or
log FM in a 'general purpose' synthesiser, what would be the merits of each?
Is this a matter of opinion or is one a 'better choice'.  Every vintage
synth I have ever used (not a great many) only ever had log cross modulation
(output of one vco into the V/Oct input of the other).  Any thoughts
appreciated.
