Thanks all - a few people have suggested a relay as the way to go.
Rapid have this on special - 12 Volt, Normally Open...

Circuit is single supply 9 volt...
I guess it would live between the circuits audio output (the Collector of a 2N3904 Transistor) and the live pin of the physical audio out Jack?
