After selecting the ripup command, do a right-click into the layout.  
A pop-up will come up that lets you ripup the selected group.  
Alternatively, you can do a cmd-right-click (on Mac, I forget how  
it's done in the windows version) into the layout. This will ripup  
the group immediately.
This not only works for ripup, but for many other commands.
