[sdiy] [OT] choice of reverb

Hello,
My favorite reverb is a little vintage thing named MIDIVERB and MIDIFEX
made by Alesis in the middle 80's ... I mean the first FX boxes made by Alesis,
housed in a black plastic box with rounded corners with blue or yellow stickers
with preset names table on the top. Do not confuse with the other Midiverbs :
II, III or IV who sound really crappy , cold and 'digital' compared to those
little ones ...
For those of you who were not yet born at this time ;) It is a 12 bits digital
reverb with 63 presets and a 'discrete' DSP inside made around a 8031, two
eproms + DAc and a pile of classic TTL/CMOS , so it is possible to repair it too
:)
I have 'modified' one of the eprom to get all the 'Verb' and 'Fex' effects on
the same box, for a total of 126 presets so, selectable by a switch ... the
sound is REALLY great and i feel it is much more 'musical' than most of 16 bits
racks, at least for instruments ... There is alway a good preset ready for any
situation = no loose of time to setup dozens of parameters ...This is precious
when you need to go fast ...
And best of all , they cost almost nothing on the second hand market : between
$10 and $30 usualy ! :)
Now if i need a BIG reverb, something super clean, transparent , etc, etc :
i use plugins on my PC ...
I also 'have' another favorite reverb: a perfectly natural one, something
absolutly fantastic , yes yes believe me :)
The problem is that today the access to this 'reverb' is closed for security
reason ...
In Toulouse City there is a big hill named 'Rangueil' ... Under the hill,
invisible from the external , there is a huge water tank since the WWII... 100%
made of cement and high like a building with many level of hundreds of meters
squares each ...Well you can see rooms end when you are inside... This tank is
no more used since a very long time and when i was a student, with friends we
have found an open access to the tank and went there to explore it a little bit
and play with the reveb ... We bring wisthles , perc, flutes and other small
instruments to make noise ... It was quite dangerous because of holes everywhere
and perfect dark...
But this place had the most beautiful natural reverb i have heard ! :) Super
long decay ,perfectly damped and spacialised sound ... A 'dark' decay impossible
to imitate with the digital thing , or may be in 20 years with a 65536 bits
resolution technology may be ;)
Sadly i have never recorded anything inside but i will alway remind me this
perfect FX :) Well this was my little story of the day , and pologise the
little OT shift...
Cheers,
Marc B.
