Virtually all MMC card have a very simple SPI interface. The native 1-bit MMC interface is (except for the command set) identical to the SD card interface. True SD cards also have a faster mode that has four data lines, while later incarnations of the MMC standard have added 4-bit and 8-bit modes. To talk to an SD card you either need an SD card controller or pay for the spec that details the encryption of the communication with the card. There are lots of examples on the net on how to use MMC cards through the SPI interface, so that may be your best bet.

The homepages of the standards organizations:
http://www.mmca.org/home (you need to "register" to get at the spec document)
http://www.sdcard.org/home (the simplified physical layer document is free)

The information in Wikipedia is partially outdated and has some questionable information depending on which of the many pages dealing with memory cards you land. However you may want to check some of the references listed in the various articles.
