The Mac version of Realplayer isn't too bad, but the Windows version,  
indeed, has always been an intrusive piece of crap. It was the format  
chosen by GaTech's distance learning folks - it's definitely not  
something I would have chosen.

That said - there is an alternative to the official Realplayer  
software out there that avoids the spyware/adware aspect of the  
official software. I haven't tried these myself, but they are worth a  
look:
