Of course you could cut out a rectangular hole
and fit/glue in a piece of perspex.
cut the perspex roughly with a jigsaw,
lay a piece of sandpaper flat on your workspace
and draw the piece of perspex over it.
apply gentle downward pressure.
If this is done precisely you can even omit glue,
simply squeeze the perspex into the hole.

It takes some time but looks nice
