Fortunately (or unfortunately), I've been doing a lot of recent work
with LCD displays - this is what I've found:

For alphanumeric displays, they are pretty much compatible with each
other, although there are a few slight differences (such as the Batron
42003 20x4 LCD display which needs a slightly different initialisation
sequence to other displays to get it to work correctly).

I've initialised 8x1, 16x2, 20x2, 24x2 and 40x2 using the same code.
40x4 is effectively the same as having two 40x2 displays (there's two
enable lines, one for the first pair of rows, and another for the second
pair).

For graphical displays, small sizes can have a commonish driver chip;
larger sizes you tend to be on your own.
