In which case no digital system will ever be adequate.
The same is true for DSP based synthesis, I mean, is 44.1Khz good
enough? is 96Khz? 24 or 16 bit? if you're gong to use digital the line
has to be somewhere.
as you say yourself, apples and oranges.
Each person draws the line as to what they consider 'adequate' quality
in terms of features.
Life is a compromise, audio the same. :-)

sorry, if you're insistent on 'analogue' quality you will never
achieve that with Digital. Not even when you have sample rates in
excess of 1Mhz and bit depths in excess of 32bit.
