...also, not to belabour the point, but no-one actually refuted my (naive)
analysis, so I'm assuming it's basically correct.  However, I'm wondering:

Does anyone on the list have any experience with the NTE7072 IC dual DC
controlled potentiometer?  It seems like a toy which could be used to great
effect all over synth circuits, but it is a little pricey (about $9) and big
(18 pin DIP).
