A fact lost on the makers of the Sinclair ZX-81 and Timex Sinclair 1000, 
who used a small, approximately 2"x2" slab of aluminum attached to the 
7805. Overheating was rather common and replacing the heatsink with one 
even marginally better was one of the first mods.

Seriously, though... look at the Power One supplies: the case is the 
heatsink.
