I usually panelize multiple copies of multiple designs onto a design panel.
This keeps the prototyping cost way down.
Getting proficient with EDA tools is time consuming. I would not invest the
time into learning a tool that outputs proprietary files or locks you in to
a vendor.
gEDA/PCB is free and outputs industry standard formats.
My footprint library and EDA automation tools are at www.luciani.org.
My works-in-progress section has pictures of some of the boards I have
done with the tools. I switched from Eagle to gEDA/PCB a few years ago.
