With the following definitions identical results are finally obtained 
before and after mapping:

saw->wave:	wave = cos(pi*(saw+1))

saw->tri:	tri  = abs(2*saw)-1
tri->wave:	wave = sin(pi/2*tri)

The error I had originally made was to use a mapping that would 
produce a phase shift between the two waveforms.  For Ian this is of 
no consequence as the circuit just maps things the most natural way 
and doesn't care about the definitions. :-)
