[sdiy] Voltage Regulators

I know people arn't fans of the 78xx/79xx regulators due to noise issues and
the like, however I was just readnig the LM317 datasheet and it looks much
improved over the fixed regulators.  Any opinions on LM317 vs LM723?  Power
supply only needs to be in the 800ma range or so and even running at 50%
Vin/Vout difference I should be easily within specs.

Only reason I'm considering it is it would mean much less complex power
supplies and thus smaller.  Not a huge deal but every square inch saves
money!
