I thought Europe was the source of American trends actually. Or maybe that 
was just in the 80's

Black lights are cool. Some cheapo touch -screen phone that I got has a UV 
led on the bottom for " checking money".
I didn't get why you have to check money when you are making a call, so I 
took the thing apart and use the LED to illuminate an embossed sheet of 
flourescent acrylic from the edge.
That is way cool.
