[sdiy] good way to get single layer Press n peel layouts?

i need to make a few boards..coming up on A DEADLINE HERE.

they are mainly going to contain a few chips..CMOS counters and 4016 switches as well as an opamp or two. other than the opamp circuits, the counter circuits are basically just one connection per pin. there might be a cap or two but these are not super involved boards.

however i have zero experience turning a schematic into a working layout.

So- I am wondering if i should

1. Just try to solder them up on radio shack perfboards-however this is always messy and the radio shack pads seem to fall off with repeated soldering

2. Try to find a good quality stripboard and go that route

3. OR try to find a pretty easy PCB layout program that CAN do single layer...all the ones i have found do dual layer only.
Does pcb express allow single layer?

ANY ADVICE would be great. i dont have the time to try my hand at wirewrapping and i am hoping for a result that will look good and stand up to repairs.

thanks
