[sdiy] sdiy marriage troubles?

Hi Dan,
Although my stuff is in the basement, I too had complaints from my
wife at first. However, the profits from the first batch of
Synthasonic modules I sold went to buy her a new washer and dryer (the
things she wanted most at the moment) and ever since, the attitude has
changed... :-) On a more serious note... why not ask her if she has
any thoughts on a more appropriate location, or at least a location
which wouldn't cause problems? Otherwise, perhaps for the time being,
put away everything but the synth when you're not actively working on
it (a huge PITA, I know, but that's what I used to do when we were in
an apartment). Call me neutered, but I'm to the point where I am far
more willing to compromise than I once was just because it's less
painful than arguing....
I think it's tough for musicians because we're all very passionate
about our job/hobby (jobby?). When you like what you do, even if you
are a professional musician, many people (even your spouse) can be
suspicious that you are incurring expenses for fun, and not as a
result of your business needs. I make 100% of my living from various
aspects of the music biz, and I frequently find myself having to
explain that I actually needed to drop $2300 on new gear for the
studio, or place $500 orders with Mouser on a regular basis. I have
had to frequently admit that I would still be willing to spend the
money on these things even if it wasn't my job, which makes all of the
expenses a hard sell with my wife.
Good luck. Marital stress is no fun.
Sam E.
