The VDIP1's expensive though.  Why not just use SD instead of USB sticks?

But in either case the thing with updating the firmware this way is 
you'd have to use a proper FAT32 filesystem (so the firmware could be 
put on there from a computer) which takes a lot more implementing than 
simply dumping the sample data in raw format.
