Just thinking a little more about it (and also Seb's reply to my reply),
the SO-8 chip is SPI, which means this could be used instead of the SO-8
device quite easily as they're both SPI.

And also Seb's latest reply - could also have the new firmware on USB
stick (the Vinculum itself also self-upgrades in this manner).
