Rather than trying to 'sync' note length to the sequencer tempo, you
could simply trigger the sample with a gate pulse that is the desired
length. In your example a square wave gate signal with 8th note
frequency and 50% duty cycle.
The sample start point and/or pitch can then be modulated
simultaneously. Tweaking the duty cycle of the square wave would change
the notes between staccato and legato. Tweaking the release rate would
'fill' the gaps between the notes in a slightly different way.
