One tends to think of high humidity - as in Southern California- as a bad
thing for electronic gear - and it is - but LOW humidity is worse.
Because, static electricity damage is vastly likelier in very dry air, the
kind you get in winter in North Carolina. All the moisture freezes out of
the air, then the air is heated, reducing relative humidity further..
High humidity makes gear sick, but low humidity kills it.
