Many thanks everyone, that has all been really useful.
Looks like they could make a handy little cv quantizer or waveshaper/distorter maybe...
As soon as i get a weekend off work, I'll see what I can come up with.

Interesting. It sounds sort of like half a LM3915 bar graph chip... with open collector outputs.

IC Voltage Level Indicator, 5 steps, Log response, Open Collector Outputs
pin 1 = ground
pin 2 = Q1 |
pin 3 = Q2 | All outputs
pin 4 = Q3 | Open collector
pin 5 = Q4 |
pin 6 = Q5 |
pin 7 = Vcc (12Vdc max)
pin 8 = Analog In (no idea about the range)
