I can't agree more with Paul. I am 3 (And a bit !) times your age but  
I was
14 when I started. "Mad and boring" are all relative terms. It was  
interesting
enough back then but technology has made it so much more exciting now.
Digital synthesis outside of laboratories did not exist much before  
the 80's.
