Wouldn't a simple electronic switch do the same thing?

THis link shows an intersil op-amp with a disable pin being used to
provide a voltage output proportional to phase. Not sure how fast the
disable is - the full article talks about video multiplexing and this,
the phase detection, being a low speed application but that might be
fast enough for audio use. Someone might have a use for this hence
passing it on.
