For the power supply, trying to push a 2.1 plug into a 2.5 jack will do it.
I've learnt that one might as well make gear gorilla-proof to start with,
because you can't go out in the field & stop people abusing gear.

I've seen phono jacks on some gear that had a closed end - and couldn't
quite take the full length of some plugs. That's not pretty either.
