Good bit of advice there. And if You read between the lines:
BC547/BC557 as equivelents-- probably any typical small signal NPN/PNP
transistor will do. (One way to decipher Japanise schematics: If
they're all over the place, they're nothing fancy - If those aren't
"Thee Dotted Ones" ;)

I wouldn't try to substitute the FET as both Small Bear and Vintage
Planet carry these. (And actively used at least by x0xboxers and
stompboxers)
