Another data point : Vermason sell two different grades of foam
for that purpose.
http://vermason.co.uk/FullCatalog/Packaging/Foam/ConductivePinInsertionFoam/241530/
241530 FOAM, CONDUCT, PIN-INSERTION, 6MM x 1M x 1M
* Prior Vermason Item Number: L2506
* Carbon impregnated high density open-cell polyurethane foam,
* Density 35 to 55kg/m3
* Provides mechanical and ESD protection, retains devices by
their pins, non-corrosive
* Brings inserted terminals and pins to equipotential
* Rs: <10E4 ohms; Rv: <10E3 ohms/m
* £13.30 (13.30 GBP/m²)
http://vermason.co.uk/FullCatalog/Packaging/Foam/ConductiveClosedCellPinInsertionFoam/241560/
241560 FOAM, CONDUCT, PIN-INSERTION, CLOSED CELL, 6MM x 1M x 2M
* Prior Vermason Item Number: L2650
* Cross-linked, closed-cell polyethylene foam
* Density 32kg/m3
* Excellent chemical and physical stability; good for long
term storage
* Ideal pin-insertion and pin-retention characteristics
* Brings inserted terminals and pins to equipotential
* Rs: 10E3 to 10E5 ohms; Rv: <10E3 ohms/m
* £32.60 (16.30 GBP/m²)
The more expensive product is not the denser one ; it's the one
made of polyethylene and supposedly "good for long term storage".
