What resolution and speed on the PWM? If you're ok/able to push it
offboard there are many different led lighting chips with gobs of PWM
channels that you could use, or if you only needed 8 bit you could bit
bang into old glue logic like the 592 and then mux it.
One plus on an ofboard system with smarts like the led drivers is that
you can set it and forget the pattern you want, so the cpu has more
time for other stuff.
Of course, I'm not clever enough to "see" what you're trying to do
with it yet, so all of the above might not be what you're looking for.
