I've been wondering if it were feasible to use FETs like that...

That's one of the reasons I posted about that "simple VCA" a while back.  
While a regular VCA seems to carry lots of requirements for typical synth 
applications,  I'm thinking more along the lines of volume controls, 
cross-fading,  and other such stuff that should be do-able without getting 
all that complicated.
