My guess the low cost audio playback is made with a 1-bit Sigma Delta 
modulator and it will shure need some filtering. Its easely done in an 
FPGA and is a cheap solution for a DAC.
This offcourse doesnt mean it isnt any good :-) . 1-bit can give you 
16-bit resolution wich is nice.
