No, no, no...you need to punch sequence numbers on your cards so you can
use the card sorter - a masterpiece of electromechanical design.
My horror story was the pdp-11 assembly language implementation of the
unix utility sed that had to be read on a card reader that occasionally
read *two* cards at a time. Let's just say my deck was big enough to
usually encounter this, and that the OR of two cards != reading the two
cards in sequence.
ob-sdiy: I used a similar pdp-11 as the control processor for a
primitive four voice polyphonic synth in 81/82. Not exactly portable -
the processor and peripherals was racked and stood about 6' high.
