By now the Roland Hex pickup patent should be expired.
G-vox positioned their unit as a "guitar teaching tool"
so the hex pickup in that case is a non-issue

Gibson has a patent on a new hex pickup with tapered
blades, so they can sense both vertical and horizontal
string vibrations. Whether that is useful is anybody's
guess. Strings normally vibrate in an oval pattern that
slowly rotates (precess). Think of a spirograph (epicycloid
or hypocycloid curves). I suspect the idea was for Gibson
to surround their digital Les Paul with patents to build a fence
arounf the technology

They also patented attaching the pickup directly to the guitar
(tune-o-matic) bridge. I have prior art (AHMW2001 etc) but
they have the most lawyers, and getting Larry Hendry to testify
would be real tough :^(

The hex piezo needs to live right near, or better still, ~in~
the bridge to be most effective
