I'm going to through a rel life example in here and you guys can decide if
it is relevant or not.

I made a compressor/expander with a degree of independent control over each.
I no longer remember the settings I was using, but it was possible to get
infinite sustain without strumming. I was able to play just using the
fretboard alone. The feedback was entirely acoustic.
Basically you need some sort of feedback loop with controllable high gain.
