[sdiy] 1496 VCA?

While looking through the International Modular book ( thanks Loscha! ), I
noticed that the VCA was 1496 based. A little more digging around online
also shows the PAIA 9700 VCA is 1496 based. I'm assuming there is some
reason they arn't used more often considering how simple the circuits are
and how cheap the 1496 is. If anyone is interested in the circuit, its on
PDF page 26/booklet page 28 left side. 34 parts at about a total cost of
$3. Really inexpensive.
Also there is a lowpass-only version of the PWM based filter on PDF page 9.
