Dan,
As I read this schematic, the Ref. voltage is supplied by a little zener
diode regulator, D1, R17 and C3 (half way down diagram, on right hand
side), providing a 6.2v reference voltage.
The "Ref" label is used simply to avoid having a wire crossing
everything else, just join the "Ref" points to each other, as you would
with "+15v" or ground points.

on the toy synth vco, what voltage should go into REF??? 3volts? 1.5
volts?
looks cool!! i want to build these but have always been afraid of the
REF.
if you can just tell me what amount of voltage to put in there, i can
buy a voltage reference right/
