To make it more complicated: everything is national law. The anglosaxon 
tradition (UK, US, Canada, Ireland, Australia and partially also Japan) 
of creators, authors, producers, and distributors rights is different 
from the so called roman tradition (most countries of Europe). Though 
there are meanwhile a lot of similar rules a heavy lawsuit in the US may 
be ridiculous in France and vice versa.

E.g. the so called artwork on a pcb is not protected by the german 
copyright (the basic principle here is: technical design is not art), 
but instead of there is a much stronger protection of the producer 
regarding similarity of products. Maybe you recognize, that B**ringer 
never cloned german products.
