[sdiy] best way to route cv in a non modular synth?

Lets say I have a set of 9 cv sources
and i have at least 8 destinations.
What is the least cluttered way to route these. NOT all destinations need all sources. THe only ones that might are the VCO and VCF.
the lag might only need 2 sources (envelope follower and frequency to voltage)
the sample and hold needs a few clock sources
the Vca needs a couple mod options
THe A/R gen might not need anything.
The Lfo Cv In needs a few too.
So that leaves what options?
the way I have been doing it is with 8 rotary pots
each one HAS ONE MODULATON SOURCE (lfo 1 for instance)
this can then be routed to any of the destinatons and whatever is left on the rotary can be for either ALL or combinations. (vcf plus VCO)
is this a good idea?
another way would be to have each mod source on a matrix of toggle switches.
any other ways?
i think its hard to keep A LOT of modulation options when you are working purely with pots... you start using up space quickly and it gets confusing to lay it out.
any advice appreciated!!!
thanks
