I can't remember if this came up here, but Futurelec has the LM394 for 
$1.80.  This is an incredible bargain that everyone should take advantage 
of, IMO.

Ray Wilson has disparaged these, but I have carefully characterized them 
and they are very good for expo converter applications.  Don't let Ray's 
comments put you off from buying them.
