Hmm, dunno... when I was matching transistors at my first
employer - now a part of Zetex - we'd start with setting up a
tight bin on the tester (mostly to sort on hfe IIRC) and take it
out whenever we'd have about twice as many transistors than we
were expected to deliver. Sometimes these were sold
as "pre-matched" right out of the bin, but the actual matching
was always done on a bridge with different setups depending on
what to match for. Rejects went back into the wide bin on the
tester. Pairs were easy, but octets would take quite a bit
longer...

What you are doing with your matcher is like the "pre-matching"
part that the tester was doing for us. Real good matching is way
better than that (but may not be necessary).
