I experenced the same thing when I was playing a sequence of high  
notes on the flute (hearing only an additional lower note, probably  
the difference tone). My flute teacher told me that this is normal.

Obviously, what else could it be? Since only one note is played at a  
time, I wonder if it's the currently played note mixing with the  
acoustic echo of the previous one, or if the "mixing" is done in the  
brain?
