I use a type of alchol, in pure (or near as near as can be 99.8% or somthing - 100% pure costs lots!), all the time on plastics as
a selective solvent.
I use it to remove paint, but leave the plasitic intact. I have a solvent bath, which, in some cases (when im busy with other
things) the platic items get left in for weeks, if not longer : /
Incidently, ive noticed that, whilst not removing it, if the items have epoxy resin on them (ie have been broken and repaired in the
past), the alchol hugly weakens the resin, but, again, in this case, with this alchol and this platic, the plastic remins inert no
matter what the time scale. So, again, its a case of material and solvent.
I would suspect that ethanol or methanol would be fine with standard injection moulded keys, but, again, i just fill up a sink with
hot soapy water and leave them in that for a while.

ps. i keep meening to buy some bilogical washing powder for cleaning things - i dont know a great deal about it, but im hoping that
it may be good for low temperature soaking (and save me some scrubbing) on things like keys etc. ( not to remove paints! : )
