Ah yes, that's one of the great things about psychoaccoustics :)
Timbre, pitch, phase, delay... it's all so closely related that
distinctions made crumble under the feet of anyone who pursues
clarity...

Have you ever considered this possibility of a simple sawtooth..
compare what harmonics a C3 and a C2 sawtooth has, and instead of
adding them all, add only a part of them... you get something
'between' C3 and C2. Then add several more. You get something between
that and C3. And so on...

So what was this 'octave' thing again? I got lost ;)
