I should clarify. If you have a signal modulated with a 1 Hz sinusoid,  
your eye won't really be able to detect which part of the wave is  
going positive and which is going negative. So it will visually look  
like something with two cycles per second.

Ian just posted a pretty thorough note on this which I need to go over  
and think about. There's excellent food for thought there that is  
making me rethink things.
