Metal and most kinds of rubber - feel free to use alcohol.
If there's plastic involved, use at most 10% and quickly wipe it off.
If you have something sticky to remove, like a sticker, just use dry
toilet paper, and rub it into the thing. the glue will 'shred' the
toilet paper and those tiny shards will begin to roll up and come off.
You're not damaging anything chemically this way.

If there's rubber involved, watch out with the lubricants, as those
can melt the rubber.
