[sdiy] [OT] How did you start?

My official start in SDIY was waaayyyy back in 1973 (or there
abouts...maybe 1972?) when John Simonton had a series of articles in
Radio Electronics on building the Paia 2700 synthesizer. I was in my
second year of collage, and could not afford to purchase even that kit,
so I built up the circuits from spare junk, which was pretty easy, and I
was hooked. I started immediately trying to improve the modules. In
1977/78, I completed my first polyphonic synthesizer (all the circuits
designed by myself). And I have been hooked ever since. There was a
period between about 1988 until about 1997 where I did not do any SDIY.
Mostly because at the time, it seemed pointless...there was nobody I
knew of that seemed interested in analog synths...let alone, making
their own...until late in 1977, or was it late in 1998...I found the
SDIY list, and that rejuvenated my interest again...and have been here
ever since.

I'm doing an informative speech on SDIY for my public speaking class and I'd like to have some testimonials about how other people besides myself got started in SDIY. I'm not looking for anything lengthy or profound, just one or two sentences about what got you into this awesome hobby/addiction.
