[sdiy] [OT] How did you start?

Back in early 2003, I bought a pro One, which was the first analogue
machine I'd got since I sold my SH101 back in the 80s. Despite it being
a relative bargain, at 400 quid or so, I still thought it was too
expensive for what it did, and a while later, I found a Maplin SSM2044
VCF PC board stashed away in the attic, bought on a whim and never
built, .....so....... why not build some analogue synths - you can
design the synth of your dreams, and it's bound to be cheaper, right?
Ahem..... Well, it *can* be if you bulk-buy components and hunt for
bargains, don't use fancy Schaeffer panels, and if all the time spent
learning, building and testing is considered as hobby/fun, and not
charged as a business.... but the start-up cost is considerable, and
anyway, by then the sdiy beast had got me happily hooked. I still am.
But the best bit is, you do get a machine to your specs, which you can
repair and maintain, and most of all, it IS fun.
:-)
cheers,
Dave
