[sdiy] [OT] How did you start?

I was reading the elektor Formant synthesizer articles at the magazines rack 
in the supermarket, because I couldn't afford to buy them.
Once a year I saved my money for the "Halbleiterschaltungsheft", which 
contained 100 cercuits, some of them music electronics.
At home, I tried to build similar things, but less expensive, using surplus 
components.

Hello all,

I'm posting this as off topic because it's more about you people than 
synths. I'm doing an informative speech on SDIY for my public speaking class 
and I'd like to have some testimonials about how other people besides myself 
got started in SDIY. I'm not looking for anything lengthy or profound, just 
one or two sentences about what got you into this awesome hobby/addiction.
