[sdiy] [OT] How did you start?

Hello all,

I'm posting this as off topic because it's more about you people than synths. I'm doing an informative speech on SDIY for my public speaking class and I'd like to have some testimonials about how other people besides myself got started in SDIY. I'm not looking for anything lengthy or profound, just one or two sentences about what got you into this awesome hobby/addiction.
