I believe that the dotcom Q960 uses those tricks, yet some owners
still seem annoyed by bulb failures.

That's the basic idea that I had, too. Especially if you can find
lenses with a vintage look, like the old ribbed half sphere type. I
thought Mouser had 'em but I can't find them on the site.
